FAQ

ABOUT OUR PRODUCTS

+ What makes Superfood Cocoa chocolate so delicious?

We make our premium craft chocolate using only directly-sourced single origin high quality cacao beans, coconut nectar sugar and fresh-pressed cocoa butter we make ourselves from the same premium beans we use to make our chocolate. We never alkalize or use any additives. We work with very best beans from Latin America. Every step of our crafting process is customized for each individual bean type in order to highlight the unique flavors of the specific beans.

+ How is your chocolate different to the standard chocolate sold in a supermarket or my local corner shop?

First of all the mass market chocolate is made using cacao mass made from beans from Ivory Coast. Farmers in Ivory Coast are part of traficking and child slavery, as well as they are using practices and processes that affect the quality and flavour of cacao baens. Without much (if any) thought given to quality or flavor, the beans are high roasted using a one-size-fits-all roast profile, cocoa butter is sold for use in beauty and other products, cacao is alkalized (a chemical process which strips off natural flavours and nutrients). The added soy lecithin (extracted from soybeans using the chemical hexane) is usually added to make everything flow more easily in large industrial equipment. The final “chocolate” product often contains minimal amounts of cacao – sometimes as little as 11%, just 1% above the minimum level to legally call it chocolate!

Counterintuitively, most mass market chocolate also contains vanilla, which has the polar opposite flavor from chocolate. Why is it added? Vanilla masks the unappealing flavor of the heavily processed chocolate.

+Do Superfood Cocoa chocolates contain genetically modified (GM) ingredients?

No, none of our products contain Genetically Modifired (GM) ingredients. To make life easy, against every product listed on our website we have included full ingredients and allergens details.

+Why do you use coconut nectar instead of cane sugar?

Cane sugar comes from the water inside the sugarcane plant. It is much more mass-produced and processed. It is usually linked with negative health effects like weight gain, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. Unlike the sugars found naturally in foods like fruit, it offers calories with few nutrients or health benefits.

However, the coconut nectar is minimally processed which ensures that it retains a lot of the natural goodness it came from the tree with. It’s rich in iron and zinc, as well as 17 different amino acids and antioxidants. You’ll also find that it contains vitamins C and B.

Coconut nectar has a lower Glycemic Index than refined sugar, which has a GI between 55 and 84. This is because it has a lower proportion of sucrose while the glycemic index in coconut sugar does not exceed 22.

Keeping in mind that the glycemic index is the speed with which a food raises blood glucose level, coconut sugar could be more suitable for people living with diabetes.

+ Is your chocolate dairy free and gluten free?

All of our chocolate is gluten-free. All of our dark chocolate bars are dairy-free. We do use dairy in some other bars, and it is always called out in the ingredients. Please check the list of ingredients.

+ What is the difference between normal milk and lactose free dairy milk?

Lactose-free milk is easier to digest for people with lactose intolerance. Lactose-free milk is just as nutritious for you as regular dairy milk because it contains all the same essential milk vitamins and proteins, just without the lactose. This means all members of your family can enjoy the nutritios and delicious real milk chocolate, even if they’re lactose intolerant. Our chocolate is a delicious and healthy treat for anyone.

+ What is the shelflife of your chocolates?

For most of our bars it’s two years, although for our inclusion bars it’s shorter. Each bar is stamped with a “Best Before” date. Keep in mind the chocolate will stay good after that time. However, we recommend eating it as close the purchase date as possible for best flavour.

+ Do you use sugar, preservatives or emulsifiers in your chocolates?

There are no preservatives, emulsifiers, soy lecithin or artificial ingredients in any of our chocolate products! All of our chocolates are also artificial or refined sugar free.

+ Is your cacao powder alkalized?

We never alkalize. Most hot chocolate powders are alkalized which means it’s washed with a synthetic solution of potassium carbonate. This not only strips the natural flavors of the cacao but also removes most of the beneficial antioxidant flavanols, which are compounds that play a significant role in the beneficial effects of eating cacao.

+ What is different about your cacao powder?

We’re one of the only chocolate makers to press our own cocoa powder from the same beans we use to make our award winning single origin bars.  One of the many benefits of this time consuming process is we’re able to make this rich, incredibly flavorful hot chocolate mix from scratch right here in our chocolate kitchen.  In every cup of hot chocolate you’ll taste the unique flavor of the beans, and get the full benefit of cacao’s flavanols!

+ How do I store my chocolate?

It’s best to store chocolate in a cool, dry environment. But, don’t put it in the refrigerator! Chocolate easily absorbs odors of whatever is in the refrigerator (Blue cheese, lamb curry — you get the idea). Also, when the bars go from a cold environment to a warmer one condensation can form, causing fat bloom (a white patches on the bar). It doesn’t mean the bar has gone bad, but it doesn’t look very good. If you do need to refrigerate it, be sure to wrap it well, and allow ample time for it to reach room temperature after you remove it from the fridge.

+Is your chocolate Certified Organic or Fair Trade?

The reality is that cacao farmers can’t afford synthetic fertilizers so their cacao beans are organic by default. Their practices are environmentally friendly and self sustained. Organic certification requires that farmers pay annually a very high fee, the paperwork is a time consuming and the reality is that cacao that’s certified organic isn’t always free from pesticides or other harmful chemicals.

Fair Trade requires only a small premium over commodity prices and also requires that farmers pay a high fee to be part of the program. That money can be put to a better use, hence we instaed use the Direct Trade model – our supplier has personal relationships with all of our farmers and always negotiate the price directly with them. We pay premium price for our cacao beans that is well above Fair Trade minimums – at least 100% above commodity prices and in some cases 200%, 300% or more! Our supplier will only work with farmers who use good labor practices, that workers are being treated well, and that they’re paid at least the legal minimum wage.

+ Some of your chocolate bars have been out of stock for a long while. Will they be back in stock anytime soon?

We work with cacao beans which are sourced from smallholder farmers. Their stock levels are greatly affected by climate change which means we have been unable to get our usual order. But we are always doing our best to secure some stock. Dominican Republic is especially hard to source but we are extremely pleased to have secured some cacao beans and we are expecting the shipping to reach us in April, restocking our online shop in May 2025.
